This summer I was really lucky to see brown hairstreak butterflies. They are very rare in the UK and they are in danger of going extinct. I saw some near Malmesbury at one of the meadow sites where I carry out my field surveys. I decided to try and find brown hairstreak egg. The butterflies lay their eggs on twigs. They are so tiny…smaller than the head of a pin, but i managed to find two. I was so excited. The crown hairstreak butterfly also has a cousin called the purple hairstreak. These are more common and really beautiful. Try googling them.
