Intriguing question! I believe the answer is that humans didn’t evolve directly from chimpanzees, but instead ‘shared a common ancestor’. What this means is that chimpanzees and humans evolved from something in different ways, leading to the main differences between us and chimpanzees we see today.
I don’t think anyone has said that we evolved as chimpanzees – I’m not researching in this area, but I think the possibility is that chimpanzees and humans might have evolved from a single ancestor.
