• Question: can the moon stop orbiting the earth

      By bouncing laser light off the surface of the moon and timing how long it takes for the light to return, scientists are able to work out how far away the moon is from the Earth.
      By doing this, they’ve worked out that the moon is actually moving away from Earth *very* slowly. However, the amount of time required for this movement to result in the moon no longer orbiting the Earth would take a very long time indeed…
